Up till this point, friendship was exalted over other forms of love, because the ability to befriend (starkly different from "to ally with") is uniquely human and not really connected with or explained by biological nature. The words "free" and "friend" share a root word in Old English. To be truly free is to have protected communion with your friends. The last two centuries have been about breaking down protectionism. Now we can't even post our frogs without getting vilified.
