Great post. It's essential to learn to recognize the sorrow we cause ourselves and others by our own bad choices, without excuses. Knowing yourself, without self-delusion is painful. But it's the only way out of bad patterns of mind. Learn to love the pain. Learn to be joyful anyway. Self esteem is a lie.

There has always been a psychopathological tension within the axis of collectivism/sociability vs vulnerable narcissism ("victimhood" and loner culture), and this performative narcissism is likely a more universal evil than the unique but separate "dark triad" grandiosity, or the mindset of greater men. Is this why NPCs swarm to places where loners are non-present (1990s-2015 mainstream/IRL vs post-2015 "nerd"/"counterculture" internet media)? Maybe it is the sedative against serf work of the white collar "BS work" kind or the "service industry" kind. Maybe people wanted to feel less demoralized between times of excessive solitude and excessive conformity. Where are the places for communal leisure/love/care, or is its absence the definition of dystopia?

You just beautifully described the concept of sin. It's not only "doing something bad" but also changing the state of the world for the worse, irreversibly.
Hope is one of the great Christian virtues. And anyway, it is narcissistic to get caught up in self judgements such as I am getting better and better or I am getting worse and worse. It doesn't matter, just help others. I hope you are giving to charity.

I agree but it doesn't mean the internet writ large is a horrible thing .
I also agree that using a cell phone is the worst way to go but then this substack site is one of the very few social media sites I use .
