it should probably disturb me more than it does how similar the "oversocialized" example response is to my own

This is so deeply connected to the Christian gospel that I could fill a book with comparisons. So I'll just leave it at this: What you're describing is a guilty conscience. Beauty is a mirror for guilt. But this isn't the kind of guilt that people deserve to have; it's not the kind that arises from having done something wrong. It's the kind of guilt people actively cause themselves to feel, as ritualistic self-abuse to achieve temporary catharsis -- spiritual cutting.

Somewhere along the way, we got to the point where we think we can make good people better by causing them to feel guilt, by getting them to guilt themselves and to doubt themselves, to doubt their own salvation. And then we think we can make bad people better by *not* guilting them, by shielding them and protecting them from the consequences of their own decisions, by demolishing all forms of social order that hold them to higher standards. As C.S. Lewis so aptly put it, these are men without chests.

I, too, really like women. Part of me thinks that seeing a woman smile is the closest we get to the beatific vision in the mortal realm. We are blessed to have them. Good luck getting your girl.

That bit about ritualistic self-abuse feels very accurate. It's really easy to get into it because when you're stuck in it you think it's a 'good' thing. You start to enjoy the martyrdom in it. But it can easily tear you down and cause you to doubt yourself. What do you mean by Beauty is a mirror for guilt? Also, do you know any texts that talk about guilt as self-cutting?

Tangent, but this is the psychological reality of pornography, and its destructiveness increases the more it exploits this. True of all addictions, all vices, but especially true of porn. The gates of hell are locked from the inside.

Beauty is existential meaning in a bottle -- it holds inherent value that is immediately obvious. To witness it is to allow it to ask your conscience a question: "What do I mean to you? What am I worth to you?" If your conscience is guilty, it can't answer the question, so it dodges the question instead. It hides behind a tree while God passes by. But it knows. You know.

One of my favorite books on this specifically is Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis. I like Lewis a lot. I don't know any texts specifically that frame guilt as spiritual cutting, though I've gotten that vibe from parts of the books of Job and Ecclesiastes. Randy kind of did it here: https://eggreport.substack.com/p/the-sexual-anarchy-of-working-in-220. Specifically the word "cutting." I read that and immediately saw the practical connection to pornography, at least in my personal life.

For those that have beauty as a default mode of operation, and can only react to disgust; for those that can approach with no fear at all: beware of this article, know that repeated failures might just not be "not trying hard enough" but "trying too hard".

Ted Kaczynski has always forgotten that, similar to the working class proclivity towards "over-socialization" and petrified conformism, the educated middle class have always had issues with "under-socialization" or natural maladjustment. (Left Behind by Steve Barkan) It can be said that Kaczynski lost the ability to utter the other viewpoint due to his class affiliation and personal experience. A major problem with this hypothesis, is that (a) we do not know if putting a middle class man into a working class environment to "touch grass" is viable, and (b) we do not know how the middle class integrate amongst themselves (unless you are an avid Alex Danco believer in the "Michael Scott Theory of Social Class" and believing in utter idealism and/or opportunism).
