Quite poignant. Searching outside for that which was always within in a way...

Very interesting .

I too learned to read by teaching myself when I was still in diapers .

The sheer number of people who are in charge of books but don't like to read and so try diligently to dissuade others from reading astounds me .

My son is just like the author of this piece, including reading LOTR before school.

But no, we're not letting him read Freud at 10.

Probably a good call

Maybe .

I remember reading everything I could get my hands on, the local Librarian would yell at me to only go to the children's section .

When I entered high school I went to check out the library and the angry old woman said 'this is a LIBRARY! we'll TELL YOU when you can come in, you're not allowed to look for books" .

Sheesh .

Why the hell do they allow non readers to have these jobs ?! .

Children always look for boundaries, if he understands Freud he's ready for it no matter what you think .

Thanks for all the recommendations, I’m going to check out Italo. I can relate but I’m a tad less well read than you.

"6 memos to the next millennium", winters night, and invisible cities are required reading. I would recommend starting with winters night

Thanks! I’ve always tended towards non-fiction growing up so I’m trying to balance it out as I get older.

Many of my beliefs stem from The Librarian Telling Me Not to Read Above My Grade Level.

Reading many books searching for random gems and nuggets of wisdom... There must be a better/faster way but I enjoy the journey. As for philosophy if Wittgenstein basically says the purpose of philosophy is to explain the world - or at least give us a way to understand it - I agree.
